Psychiatric Medication Management — Telehealth Across Oregon

At Wholehearted Counseling, our psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) provide thoughtful, collaborative medication management and individualized care planning for teens and adults through convenient telehealth appointments across Oregon.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse with specialized graduate training in mental health care. PMHNPs can evaluate mental health conditions, prescribe and manage psychiatric medications, and provide ongoing support — similar to a psychiatrist, with the added nursing philosophy of treating the whole person, not just the diagnosis.

At Wholehearted, our PMHNPs take a trauma-informed approach to prescribing. They take time to understand your full story, not just your symptoms.

  • All of our psychiatric medication management appointments are available via secure telehealth, which means you can meet with a PMHNP from anywhere in Oregon. Whether you're in Portland, Corvallis, Eugene, Bend, Medford, or a rural community — if you have an internet connection and you're located in Oregon, we can see you.

No commute. No waiting room. Just quality psychiatric care from a provider who takes the time to know you.

  • We believe cost shouldn't be a barrier to quality psychiatric care. Our PMHNPs are in-network with most major insurance plans in Oregon, including:

    • PacificSource

    • Moda

    • Providence

    • Regence BlueCross BlueShield

    • Aetna

    • United Healthcare / Optum

Not sure if we take your plan? Reach out and we'll check for you.

We also accept self-pay. For more information about costs, see our Good Faith Estimate.

  • What's the difference between a psychiatrist and a PMHNP?

Both psychiatrists and PMHNPs (psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners) can diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication. The main difference is their training path — psychiatrists attend medical school, while PMHNPs complete advanced nursing education with specialized psychiatric training. In Oregon, PMHNPs practice with full prescriptive authority. At Wholehearted Counseling, our PMHNPs bring a holistic, relationship-centered approach to psychiatric care.

  • It depends on the medication. Some medications, especially those for anxiety or sleep, can offer relief within days. Others — like most antidepressants — typically take four to six weeks to reach full effect. Your PMHNP will set clear expectations during your first appointment and check in regularly to track how you're responding. If something isn't working, we adjust. You won't be left wondering.

  • Absolutely — and research shows that combining therapy with medication is often the most effective approach, especially for anxiety, depression, PTSD, and ADHD. At Wholehearted Counseling, our PMHNPs and therapists work under the same roof. With your permission, they can collaborate directly so your care feels connected rather than fragmented. That said, having a therapist here isn't required to see one of our PMHNPs.
