✨ Be Yourself: A Parody to the Tune of Disney’s Be Our Guest ✨

Sometimes the best way to talk about something personal, like the (internal or external) pressure to be perfect, or the fear of letting people down—is through playfulness. Music and humor help us hear truths our hearts might otherwise resist. We also tend to remember things better by song.

So today, I’m sharing a lighthearted parody of “Be Our Guest” from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, rewritten as “Be Yourself.” 🌿✨ It’s a reminder that you don’t have to hustle, perform, or please your way into being enough.

🎵 Be Yourself (to the tune of Be Our Guest) 🎵

(Narrator intro, Lumière style)
Mesdames et messieurs, it is with deepest pride and greatest pleasure that we welcome you tonight.
And now, we invite you to relax… let us pull up a chair, as your therapist proudly presents—your parody!

Be yourself, be yourself,
Be your true, authentic self.
’Cause I tell ya nothin’s worth it
If your worth isn’t intrinsic! ✨

It’s okay to be sad,
To be happy, to be mad,
Every feeling has a reason—
(Don’t believe me? I’m not teasin’!)

Sing your song, dance your dance,
Give yourself another chance,
At that dream you gave up ’cause you thought you’d fail—

It’s all made up, you see,
Conditionality
Is not real love—
Love prevails, be yourself!

🎶 Cook your food, order in,
Microwave a little din’—
Anybody who’s complainin’
Outta do some introspectin’! 🎶

🎶 It’s a game, just a game,
That nobody wants to play—
When you’re hustlin’ and you’re jugglin’
And the pressure keeps on doublin’! 🎶

Do your best, do your worst,
Doesn’t matter if you’re first,
Just as long as you prioritize yourself. 🌿

Whether you work or play,
Or rot in bed all day—
Please trust yourself,
If you’re stressed,
It’s okay to get some rest.

Be yourself, be yourself, be yourself!

Life is so uneasy for a pleaser who’s not pleasing,
When your soul feels vulnerable just sayin’ “no…”
But if you lose anyone who loves you,
It won’t be because you loved you too! 💛

Who cares if you’re rusty,
If your house is clean or dusty,
If you exercise, or stick to running late—

Most times when we think that we are lazy,
What if we’re just tired… and capitalism’s crazy? 🌵

🎶 Be yourself, be yourself,
Be your true authentic self!

’Cause I tell ya nothin’s worth it
If your worth isn’t intrinsic! 🎶

🎶 It’s a game, just a game,
That nobody wants to play—
When you’re hustlin’ and you’re juggling
And the pressure keeps on bubbling! 🎶

Do that thing, do it scared,
Change your mind—nobody cares,
Not unless they’re benefitting from your stress!

And please take it from me,
Brené Brown is the queen! 👑
She said it best:
Worth’s not a test!
Be yourself, be yourself, be yourself!

(Big ensemble sweep)
Whether you’re a fern or you’re a cactus—
We all see the beauty that’s within! And we’re obsessed!

🎶 Be yourself, be yourself,
Be yourself! You are enough!
Not too much and not too little,
Just yourself—that is enough! 🎶

Be yourself!
Be yourself!
Be… your-self! ✨

(grand finale flourish, orchestra hit)

Closing Reflection

Whenever you need a reminder, maybe an obnoxious song stuck in your head will do the trick. 🎶Real friends won’t call you lazy, they won’t make love a test, and they certainly won’t require you to shrink yourself just to fit in. Whether you’re a fern, a cactus, or somewhere in between, your beauty is already here.
